Obituary of Louise Helen Marshall
Louise Helen Marshall was born on October 3, 1922 in Camden South Carolina to the Union of Ellen Kelley Mickle and James William Mickle. She came to Brooklyn, NY at the age of three. She attended and received her education in the New York City Public School System, graduating from Girls High School Brooklyn, NY in 1942.
She worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II as an Acetalin Gas Burner Operator where she met the late Albert Cantrell Marshall of Newport, Tennessee. They were married November 18, 1944 by the Rev. R. Henderson at Bridge Street A.M.E Church, Brooklyn, NY, where she was a member. From that union there was five children:
Barbara Ann, Albert Cantrell, Jr., Patricia Jean, Beverly Ellen, and John Howard.
In 1955, the family relocated from Brooklyn to Wyandanch, NY. She later joined the Holy Trinity Baptist Church in Amityville, NY and overcoming a life long fear of water, was re-baptized under the Pastorate of the late Rev. Dr. Spurgeon Crayton. In 1991 she obtained a letter to help in the start of a new church mission called the Living Hope Fellowship Baptist Mission and when the mission was transitioned to a Church in 1992, she became one of the charter members of the Living Hope Fellowship Baptist Church, under the pastorate of her daughter, Rev. Dr. Patricia Rickenbacker. She was consecrated as a Church Mother in 1992, and there she worked diligently remaining a faithful supporter until her departure from this life.
Louise was employed by Pilgrim State Hospital as an attendant in 1953 and retired after 30 years as a Rehab Assistant in 1983. She was very active in the Community serving in the following capacities:
1. Notary Public
2. Secretary for the Mid-Island Democratic Club for many years
3. Supervised Voter Registration drives at Wyandanch High School and Chemical Bank
4. Door to Door Petitioner for candidates such as Patrick Halpin, Tom Downey, Rich Schaeffer, Maxine Postal, Robert Kennedy and many others.
5. Poll Inspector and Coordinator for the Suffolk County Board of Elections for over 40 years
6. VFW Women's Auxiliary, Wyandanch Chapter, holding various offices including Treasurer, and First Vice-President
7. Wyandanch Community Development Corporation where she served as Secretary until the onset of her last illness in November of 2013.
In past years, Louise was a member of Queen Esther Grand Chapter, (Supreme Royal Ladies), where she obtained her 33rd degree of Eastern Stars, Ancient Acceptance Scottish Rite Adoption in 1978.
Louise loved sewing, gardening, and after retirement established her own business at home, "Louise's Floral Creations" where she made beautiful artificial floral corsages and arrangements, for churches and special occasions. She was an intelligent, gifted, talented, loving and faithful prayer warrior who loved the Lord with all her heart. She was the epitome of Proverbs 30 "Virtuous Woman." Louise had many sayings that governed her life which she always tried to instill in us; three that will always linger in our hearts is, "Don't cut off your nose to spite your face", "One hand washes the other", and "Stay together".
She leaves to celebrate her life, 2 sons, Albert Cantrell Marshall, Jr.; and John Howard Marshall of Wyandanch, NY; 2 daughters, Patricia Jean Rickenbacker of Massapequa, NY; and Beverly Cooke of Georgiana, Alabama; One daughter, Barbara Ann Brown that preceded her to glory in 2002; One Daughter- in -law, Vilma Marshall; two Sons in Law, John Rickenbacker and Al Cooke; 21 Grandchildren; 39 Great Grandchildren; One Goddaughter, Cindy Combs of Central Islip; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, the Living Hope Church Family, many cherished friends and acquaintances.
Louise's final words that she wanted included in her obituary read:
"Everything is appropriate in its own time. A time to be born; a time to grow; a time to accept and serve; a time to die and a time to be remembered."
