I remember when I was a little girl going to Mema and Papa's house meant the world to me. It was like going to Disneyland. Nothing compared to that house. I couldn't wait to get there. I remember my parents playing a trick on us one night. My Father said something came up and we couldn't go. I remember sitting in their closet crying. Then, nothing in life was more important. Of course he was joking and I transformed pretty quickly. Running and jumping all over the place. I have over a thousand memories in that house and of my Grandparents :blush: Miss and Love you dearly.....

We're all so blessed for having her as long as we did here in this lifetime, not just because she was our Matriarch, but because of the type of person she was... compassionate, happy, and overwhelmingly generous with love and giving of her time and hospitality. She was a beautiful woman inside and out, and we're so fortunate to have the love within us that she instilled.

Many thanks to all those who have shown such love and support to our family during the loss of my mother, Essie Pearl. We have been overwhelmed by the tributes on this wall as well as all of the sentiments and giftswe have received from our extended family and good friends. We also thank her church family for the wonderful home-going sendoff that they worked so hard to make a true celebration of her life. Yesterday was a beautiful, uplifting time for all who were involved, and affirmed to us that she truly touched the lives of everyone she met.
We are grateful to Joseph-Slinger Hasgill Funeral Services who created this site where we can share a slide show that reflects so many special moments from her lifetime, and a place where we can share our thoughts together about her. It has been a blessing reading the words of those who knew her, and knowing that she enriched their lives as she did ours.
We are especially thankful to our Heavenly Father who gave her such a strong faith in Him which she passed onto all of us. We know that He never left her for one moment, and we were blessed to see the peace that He instilled in her over these past few weeks. He was merciful to her, and to us, every step of the way, and we thank Him for allowing her a painless transition.
For all of those who still ask what they can do in her remembrance, I recommend that a donation in her memory to her home church be given, because that is what she would have wanted. Wyandanch Community Church of the Nazarene, 58 Cumberbach Street, Wyandanch NY 11798 is the place that was near and dear to her heart. She would have wanted all the work she did toward the furtherance of God's kingdom to continue in this part of His vineyard where she worked so hard for so many years.
My love and appreciation goes out to all of you, and it is your prayers that still sustain us. Our family was able to enjoy time together reflecting on her life and how her memory remains with each of us, just the way she would have wanted us to. We look forward to a Heavenly reunion in the future where none of us have to be separated again.

I will always remember your Mom fondly. As a teenager; I spent many joyous times at your home and your Mom always made me feel very welcomed. Your home was a place of serenity and the love between your parents was something special to behold. Mrs. Walwyn was such a warm, loving person that I felt special just knowing her. Whenever I traveled back to Long Island her house was always one of my first stops. It won't me the same when I return later this year; but I will always have the memories of the happy times we shared; and having known the special person your Mom was.
Our thoughts and prayers are with your entire family in your time of grief.

Condolences to the family of Essie P. Walwyn. I remember well her visits with us (the Dillards) when she came to Freeman, VA. I remember how beautiful she was and how much she looked like her sister, Mae. She and my father (James Dillard) were first cousins. May wonderful memories sustain you !

An Ever So Small Tribute to our Dear Aunt "Pearl"
To our 1st Cousins: Gwen, Pat, Estelle & their respective family members:
We are all deeply saddened by the passing of your mom & our Aunt, Essie Pearl Walwyn. She was the last remaining sister of our father's siblings. We keep you and your family in our prayers constantly. She was indeed a proud member of the Hopson family. There are two things consistent in a "Hopson's life". The first thing is "prayer". This family has endured its host of challenges but it has always remained grateful. We are grateful to God for women like Aunt Pearl who grace our lives and encourage us constantly to strive and be better each and every single day. We know none of us will escape this life without enduring heartache and pain. We take comfort in Psalm 30:5 which says "Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning". Our grandfather was a man of God and he showed us through his own life how prayer changes things. What he also said was that prayer allows us to accept the things we cannot change. He often said to his congregation that when you repeat the Lord's Prayer and get to the part that says "Thy will be done"…."mean it"! It is always His will we wish to do! Knowing that she would not have departed this life if it was not God's will give us great heartache but it also gives us great joy! For Christian believers…this is the race…this is the finish line…."We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord!"- (II Corinthians 5:8)
The 2nd thing consistent in a Hopson's life is "fried chicken"! For us, there is nothing that comforts us more than sitting around a table with bunch of family, friends and complete strangers, sharing conversation and a wonderful hot platter piled high with fried chicken. We all have great memories of family gatherings after church or during reunions exercising our love for the coveted "yard bird"! It is a constant reminder for us to feed our bodies, our minds, and "our soul"! We live in the moment… and in that moment we need to be grateful not only for what we have in our lives, but most importantly who we have in our lives! We are Hopsons! We know who we are but we also know "whose" we are. We are, after all, the adopted family of the Most High God!
Aunt Pearl was such a wonderful spirit! It was such a privilege to have her grace our lives. She was warm, caring, nurturing, funny, and always encouraging! We never heard her utter a negative or disparaging word about anyone. She was very close to our father and it showed in their interactions during visits. A few years ago after her memory had faded; the mere mention of my father's name "Bob" would garner memories….precious joyous memories for her! It was obvious that she loved all her brothers and sisters when she visited. All of the nieces ,nephews and cousins in the Hopson family garnered a precious space in her heart simply because we were family! When you were in her presence…you felt special…you felt cared for…because ….well??? ….you were family, and that was enough for her! She taught us to treat everyone kindly because total strangers could become friends and friends could be adopted as family. In her book, family was "special".
Few people on this earth we have ever encountered were as gentle and caring as my Aunt Pearl. She was indeed a "Pearl"! Beautiful, flawless, precious and just someone you wanted to have and hold. She was more valuable than any jewel. Seeing her and Uncle Earl together was a pure delight. It was evident that there was tremendous bond of love between them and with their daughters. She always wanted to know "how we were doing?" in our lives!
She may not have been able to remember us in her final days but we honor her in our hearts and prayers because we certainly remember her and what her life meant to us. She will be forever missed!
We loved her and we love you all!
