Obituary of Joe Turner

Joe Turner was born in Jacksonville, Florida on May 5, 1944 to the late Beulah Mae Bailey originally from Greenville, North Carolina and Robert Turner from Jacksonville, Florida. He was the second of six children. During his early years, Joe and late sister Gloria were relocated to New York, New York, where his other four siblings were born. Joe attended and graduated from the Food and Maritime Trades Vocational High School, New York, New York in 1964. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to serve his country in 1966. Sergeant Joe Turner was Honorably Discharged in 1972 after receiving multiple commendations. Sergeant Turner was recognized with the Good Behavior Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device (1960-). Sergeant Turner admirably served his country and later transitioned to represent the City of New York as a Corrections Officer at the Department of Corrections for over twenty-three (23) years before retiring. Joe was known for his incredible sense of humor, remarkable storytelling ability, and unwavering willingness to help others in need. He was a jack-of-all-trades and enjoyed working on cars and homes. He was trained in the culinary arts and enjoyed sharing gourmet cooking tips with anyone who appreciated delicious food. Joe was affectionately known by many as "Uncle Joe." He was passionate about life, his family, and the Bible. He had an active prayer life and read the Bible often, professing his faith to Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior. He is proceeded in death by his parents Robert Turner and Beulah Turner; stepmother Helen Turner; wife Alethea Fleming-Turner; three sisters Gloria Roy, Barbara Jean Turner, and Estelena Turner; and brother Tyrone Turner. Joe leaves to cherish his memory two children—Joseph Turner (Sonji) of Aldie, Virginia and Kyesha Turner of New York, New York; grandchildren Breana Turner, Nicolas Turner, and Noah Roman; brothers Allen, Phillip, and Robert; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
